Objective
The objective of this proposal is to estimate the variance of childhood asthma and allergies across Europe and to assess the relation with known and suspected risk factors for these diseases within and between study centres. Data and specimens from studies that have been conducted in a standardized way according to a common study protocol incommunity random samples of 9-11 year old children in 13 countries and 15 study centres (at least 200 per centre) will be analysed. The proposal applied for funding of collaborative laboratory analyses which include measurements of serum IgE levels, of indoor exposure to allergens and endotoxins, and of genetic markers of childhood asthma. funding is also sought for central data collation and statistical analyses. The project will deliver a pan-European database on the prevalence of childhood asthma and allergies and investigates potential determinants and interaction with genetic background.
