Objective
Little knowledge exists on cross-infection risks from dental unit water systems (DUWS) in general dental practices (GDP), with no guidelines for their safe maintenance. We propose to determine quantitatively microbial contamination odes in GDP in Europe; the role of biofilms in DUWS contamination will also be assessed. The presence of pathogens (Legion Ella, Mycobacterium and hepatitis Antigen) in DUWS will be determined. We will develop a laboratory DUWS system, to determine the efficacy of current and novel control regimes under controlled, reproducible conditions. Disinfectant regimes developed in the laboratory will be assessed in site in GDPs. The project will provide evidence-based guidelines for permissible numbers of microbes in DUWS water, and recommend practical, safe and effective microbial contamination control measures.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
