The role of nano-particles in material-induced pathologies

Objective

This proposal is a multidisciplinary research project: - to develop an innovative and technological method of diagnosis, capable of identifying the presence of micro- and nano-particles of exogenous nature in pathological processes deemed at the present time as being of unknown aetiology. On the basis of preliminary studies in human specimens of cryptogenic (unknown origin) granulomatous inflammation in which micro-/nano-particles were found, selected pathological lesions will be chosen to provide human material for the studies. This will include granulomatosis of the liver and kidneys sarcoidosis, sarcoid-like lesion of lymph nodes in cancer patients, liver cancer and Crohn's disease, -to employ suitable animal experimentation and in-vitro models to investigate pathomechanisms of possible particle-induced disease, -to determine the pathological significance of the nano-particles.
