Identification of essential fish habitats for commercial species in Coastal and protected areas (NW Mediterranean)

Objective

The proposal will provide new information to document the value of some coastal and protected habitats to fishery production in the NW Mediterranean. Coastal areas contain several habitats, including seagrass beds, rocky substrates, soft AF, bottoms and coastal wetlands.

The proposal will investigate the relative quality of each of these coastal habitats and will compare with offshore habitat. In addition to this, coastal habitats will be studied according to their protection (inside and outside a marine reserve). The relative quality of these habitats will be estimated for the first time by comparing condition indices of 6 commercial fish species captured in each habitat. An important tenet of all these comparisons is that high animal condition indicates high habitat quality. Condition indices are a measure of the energy reserves and the reproductive potential of fish.
