Development of biocontrol agents for commercial application against post-harvest diseases of perishable foods

Objetivo

Post harvest diseases of perishable commodities represent one of the most severe causes of losses and reduction in quality in the EU. The development of environmental friendly methods of disease control, as substitutes of chemicals, is an important goal to be achieved nowadays. Biological control using microbal antagonists is the most promising alternative. The main aim of this project is to develop four effective biocontrol agents (pantoea agglomerans, epicoccum nigrum, candida sake and pichia anomala) for its commercial application to control postharvest diseases on citrus, stone fruits, pome fruits and moist cereals, respectively. This project will include optimisation of production process and development of formulation techniques for each BCA to get a stable, efficient, easy to prepare and apply low cost production final product. Mechanisms of action and molecular marking methods to tracking BCAs will be studied. Final products of this research work will be environmentally friendly "biofungicides" ready to be used on both conventional and organic systems of production.
