Objective
Problems are experienced with patches of irregular colour within high value European hardwoods. This causes high reject rates during the final processing of the timber (which costs 240 euro/m³). The problems are thought to be due to biological attack and/or chemical reactions during storage and drying. The final Craft project will systematically investigate the production steps and identify ways to reduce and eliminate these problems. While the actual details of the project need to be determined, it is thought that this will concentrate on: better storage methods; low-environmental impact treatments; and, better drying techniques. The exploratory award will be used to determine the state of the art, novelty, and final work programme, partner search and to write the CRAFT proposal.
