Objective
Biodegradable plastic films are a promising new material providing a more convenient, environmental friendly alternative for mulching and low-tunnel covering. They are expected to contribute to the reduction of pollution due to plastic wastes in rural areas. The possibilities offered by such materials have not been explored sufficiently so far. The main objective of the project is to investigate the agronomic, engineering and environmental aspects involved in the use of bio plastic films in agriculture, and integrate them into well justified techniques for enhancing sustainable, environmental friendly, economically optimised low-tunnel and mulching cultivation in Europe. Moreover, the project aims at improving or developing new bio plastic films and determining their overall performance, including ecotoxicological impact, in field experiments at a European level.
