Closed system for water and nutrient management in horticulture

Objective

Throughout Europe, current horticultural practices cause very large amounts of water and nutrients to be wasted to the environment. To avoid this and to increase possibilities to control crop growth and quality, the supply of water and individual nutrients should be controlled independently and in proportion to the plant's demand, rather than supplying water and nutrients together in excess. In this project a holistic multidisciplinary approach, combining modelling and experimental research in plant physiology, substrate physics and chemistry, sensor technology, machine learning, control and optimisation techniques and economics, is adopted to reach the objectives. In addition the end users already have considerable role in the project and the last project year is used to test the integrated system at an applied research station. Furthermore, national workshops for dissemination of the results will be held during the last year in 5 countries.
