Infrared heat sterilization of soil

Objectif

The project is to develop a cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical sterilization of soil by using propane fuelled machine. Soil sterilization is necessary prior to planting crops such as potatoes to control harmful organisms and weed seeds. Methyl Bromide is currently used for nearly all sterilization and faces a Europe wide ban in 2002, owing to its ozone depleting qualities and highly toxic nature. The SME Propose will use experience with propane technology in researching and developing a prototype machine. In collaboration with partners who are growers in a variety of environments, the machine will be field tested and refined in preparation for manufacture. The projects goals are to achieve specific lower levels of harmful organisms than remain after chemical sterilization and at reduced cost. Infrared technology will benefit European sustainable agriculture, growers, operators, the environment and the consortium.
