Improving the quality and economic performance of cattle and the european leather sector through improved husbandry practice

Objetivo

The European leather industry utilises a biological raw material by-product of the agriculture and meat sector, the hide. The quality of the hide is affected by on farm husbandry during rearing, particularly the infestation with the ectoparasite, lice. This damage, termed light spot, is estimated to reduce the value of European hides and subsequent leather by 300 million Euros per annum, due to lost potential, increased processing costs and chemical usage. Control of lice infestation would have a significant impact on the competitiveness of the European industry, which is predominated by SME' s who, as such, are unable to invest the relevant resources into addressing such problems.
