New and improved wheat production and farming through the integration of automatically processed high resolution satellite images with management decision support software for economic competitiveness

Objective

European crop production is under constant pressure to reduce costs while ensuring quality and offering higher protection to the environment. These goals are to be furthered by a solution, which quickly recognises that a crop requires treatment for any given physical condition and which then proposes the best treatment. No such system is available on the market. The WHEATCOM project will provide a monitoring and best treatment decision system for the optimal production of wheat throughout Europe; its principles could however then be transferred to other crops. The system will be based on:
- 1) Highest resolution satellite images; and
2) Indicators of the physical condition of wheat analysed from the satellite images; and
3) Fuzzy logic like structures to provide the best treatment decision based on the physical condition indicators. The resulting system will be exploited through a type of Call Centre or directly through the internet with expected savings of 150 EUR/ha per year for European agriculture adopting the system.
