Survey of thatched roofs and analysis of thatching materials. establish criteria for long-lasting thatch.

Objective

The european thatching industry (estimated annual value 25 million euro) has a problem - some thatch deteriorates quickly for unexplained reasons. The nature of the thatching material, including its chemistry, may be an important factor along with climatic factors such as rainfall. Other potential thatch materials and sources will be investigated. Sme partners and collaborators including racenvironment (race) uk co-ordinating thatching international ltd (ti) uk, will co-operate in finding roofs of known age and condition which have used different materials such as wheat straw (long and combed), water-reed (phragmites) and triticale (a wheat/rye cross). Natur monumentum (netherlands), and the church commission (uk) are expected to take part. Results - more soundly based european thatching industry including production of materials.
