Objective
The Rural Information Network Gateway seeks to examine the state of the art as regards tourism and commerce in rural areas and develop an innovative low-cost, user-friendly system that will enable the dissemination of information and knowledge among isolated rural communities and provide them with an outlet for their goods and services. The RING project will take place in three phases:
1. Research and analysis into the requirements of the rural community in terms of diversification of activities.
2. Design and development of a communications network application to serve as a unified, standard European link to the needs of developing rural areas.
3. Evaluation of the service in three European test sites and exploitation and dissemination of the results. A consortium consisting of user groups, evaluation consultants and technology suppliers will carry out the project that aims to satisfy the requirements of the Common Agricultural Policy in so much as it asks for... a multi sect oral and integrated approach to the rural economy in order to diversify activities, create new sources of income and employment. The project will seek to establish the best methods and tools for the successful integration of new information and communications technologies within an effective framework for rural development and diversification.
