Development of a competitive exclusion product for poultry meeting the regulatory requirements in the eu

Objective

Due to the efforts in the EU to decrease the amount of antibiotics used in animal production alternatives have to be found, which guarantee a safe poultry production with regard to contaminations with food borne pathogens. A competitive exclusion (CE) product consisting of fully characterised and defined bacterial strains, meeting the EU registration requirements, for the prevention of day old chicks from pathogen colonisation will be developed within this project. The finally obtained defined CE product should effectively protect poultry from pathogens and therefore help to reduce the use of antibiotics. The main objectives and strategies planned to develop such a product are: selection, characterisation and in vitro efficacy testing of gut derived microbial strains; safety evaluation of the strains using molecular technique and toxicity tests; methods for the quality control of the final product using molecular techniques; development of a fermentation and stabilisation process in lab scale and finally scale up; in vivo challenge trials to demonstrate the efficacy of the CE prototype.
