Development of improved pest risk analysis techniques for quarantine pests, using pinewood nematode, bursaphelenchus xylophilus, in Portugal as a model system

Objectif

The detection of pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, in Portugal has increased the threat to the EU from this extremely dangerous pest. The Consortium will improve current Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) methodology by:
(1) Gathering data on the biology and likely impacts of PWN and its vectors in Europe.
(2) Developing and testing survey methodology to assess the taxonomy and distribution of PWN and its Monochamus vectors on the Iberian peninsula and elsewhere.
(3) Establishing live cultures of Bursaphelenchus for pathogenicity testing on pines in Europe.
(4) Using genetic similarity to carry out pathway analysis to determine the origin of the Portuguese isolate(s) of PWN.
(5) Determining eco-climatic requirements of PWN and its vectors to improve knowledge on the pest-vector relationship.
(6) Constructing new PRA models and testing them for PWN and other quarantine pests.
