Introduction of broadleaf species for sustainable forest management

Objectif

Spruce plantations outside of their potential natural distribution are often unstable due to pest attacks, wind throw, pollution and drought. Despite of fast growth of spruce timber, harvests are often irregular and economical risk increases. Many regions and forest enterprises want to convert spruce forests into mixed broadleaved forests because of biodiversity, recreation, landscaping, and soil nutrient sustainability and to avoid climatic risks. This project addresses key processes and management implications for clear-cut free conversion of spruce stands through introduction of broadleaf species. The project is organised in four work packages that investigate the ecological constrains to growth of under planted broadleaf trees, assess their quality and transfer the results towards forest management.
