Heterozygosity and fitness in anchovy. Survival, growth and fluctuating asymmetry

Objective

The aim of the project is to investigate to what degree individual allozyme variation and variation in enzyme heterozygosity levels influences fluctuating asymmetry and life history variation in anchovy. Fluctuating asymmetry in anchovy otoliths increases with environmental stress, and has been suggested as a measure of condition of larval anchovy.

The current project will investigate to what degree genetic factors influence fluctuating asymmetry in the otoliths and variation in anatomical characters. Furthermore the project will investigate effects of genetic variation on individual life history variation and fitness, and elucidate the usefulness of fluctuating asymmetry as a measure of the fitness of individuals. Anchovy will be collected in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

A method will be developed that reconstructs the history of fluctuating asymmetry in the otoliths from daily and annual increments. It is anticipated that this method will become very useful in assessment and life history studies.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
