Population genetic structuring of cephalopods along the North Western African coast

Objective

Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and cuttlefih (Sepia hierredda) are economically important cephalopod species. It is important for fisheries management strategies to identify extent of structuring among Populations along the North Western African coast. Dispersal of octopus, and cuttlefish is via pelagic juveniles, determined by oceanographic features at time of emergence. It is not possible to physically tag paralarvae, however molecular genetic markers would make an excellent tool to examine micro-oceanographic processes affecting their migration.

Newly developed microsatellite DNA markers (developed during FAIR CT 1520) will be used to address questions about stock identification of octopus and cuttlefish populations along the North Western African coast. Results from this project indicated significant genetic structuring among octopus populations from Western Sahara and Mauritania, and in Mediterranean cuttlefish.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
