Objective
The aim of this project is to study the ontogeny of the stress response in the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. We will investigate the stress response at critical developmental stages during embryonic and post-embryonic development, especially those which are characterised by, high mortality rates in commercial hatcheries, and we will determine the periods during which this species is more sensitive to stress related to rearing conditions.
Moreover we will evaluate potential pathological effects of high cortisol levels on organs development and we will determine the effects of stress on behaviour, survival and growth during the early development. We will also focus on the effect of different early life stress experiences on stress susceptibility of juveniles. This study will also allow us to formulate criteria for the evaluation of the welfare of larval and juvenile stages. Our study concentrates on the development of the HPI axis in sea bass.
