European network for investigating the global mechanims of muscle abnormalities in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Objective

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common cause of disability among elder EU citizens. An important factor compounding disability in COPD is dysfunction of skeletal muscle (both respiratory and locomotor). ENIGMA unites teams working on physiological, metabolic and structural mechanisms of muscle dysfunction in COPD to give a pan-European approach to the causes and treatment of this problem. The proposal encompasses cross- sectional studies as well as study of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying existing therapies in COPD. In addition, although the work is mainly to be conducted in humans there is some animal work which paves the way for a pilot study of a novel therapeutic agent in man. A second new treatment approach, which does not involve a pharmacologic agent, is also evaluated.
