Objective
Zinc plays important roles in development and functioning of the nervous system and its homeostasis is disturbed in many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Elevated level of zinc may play a crucial role in formation of amyloidal plaques characteristic for Alzheimer's disease. Our efforts are directed towards understanding the fundamental principles of zinc metabolism in synergic neurons in brain and finding out the ways of its regulation. Main attention will be focused to structural and functional studies of metallothionein-3 and zinctransporter T-3 and desegregation of amyloidal aggregates by metal cheaters. The final aim of the present project is the elaboration of a new strategy and tools for prevention and therapy of Alzheimer's disease through normalization of zinc metabolism in critical regions of the brain.
