Mapping existing research and identifying knowledge gaps concerning the situation of older women in europe (MERI)

Objective

Recent approaches aimed at compiling information on the living conditions of older women led to the conclusion that they are neglected as an own target group in research, although almost every fifth person in Europe is a woman aged 50 or more. In addition, there is clear evidence in the work of NGOs that certain groups of older women are disadvantaged in different social aspects, e.g. as regards the quality of medical treatment or isolation in old age. An important barrier to the improvement of their living conditions is a lack of interest representation and lobbying for older women. Main objectives of the project are to increase the knowledge about the living conditions and problems of older women, to improve the empirical basis for work of scientists, NGOs and for government tasks at social policy level aimed at older women, to stimulate and set the agenda for future research on women and ageing, as well as to raise public awareness of their situation.
