Electro-Luminescent Flat Panel Display for Terminal Applications

Objetivo

The EL FPD project's objective is to ensure the availability of high-performance, European, flat panel displays for use in terminals in telecommunication applications.
The electroluminescent (EL) flat panel display (FPD) project's objective is to ensure the availability of high performance, European, flat panel displays for use in terminals in telecommunication applications. The following main targets are set for the project: an A5 size display for integration in a Minitel terminal, an EL display of A4 size for application in an advanced videotex terminal and in a multiservice terminal and a multicolour display for telecommunications applications. High voltage integrated EL-driver circuits for these displays are part of the development programme. In addition, thin film transistor (TFT) technology for use in active matrix EL-displays has been studied. The technology could also be applied to integrate the driver circuits on the display panel itself. Minitel videotex terminals equipped with EL displays have been developed to demonstrate that the displays meet the required standards.
Achievements to date include: a yellow 384 x 280 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 235 x 170 mm{-2}, 16 grey shades and video interface, a yellow 640 x 480 pixel matrix EL display production prototype with an active area of 211 x 158 mm{-2} and 16 grey shades, a yellow 1024 x 768 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 297 x 233 mm{-2}, a green 320 x 256 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 96 x 77 mm{-2}, a yellow 1024 x 768 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 297 x 233 mm{-2} and 16 grey shades, the first samples of a 64 output integrated EL column driver, a green 640 x 200 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 195 x 122 mm{-2} and sufficient brightness for making a multicolour display, a red 640 x 200 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 195 x 122 mm{-2} and sufficient brightness for making a multicolour display, the first samples of a 40 output integrated EL row driver, a red green (2 x 640) x 200 pixel matrix mult icolour display demonstrator and a small size blue phosphor demonstrator with sufficient brightness for a multicolour display.
Technical Approach

The following main targets are set for the project:

- An A5 size display for integration in a Minitel terminal.
- An EL display of A4 size for application in an advanced videotex terminal and in a multi-service terminal.
- A multi-colour (RGB) display for telecommunications applications.

High voltage integrated EL-driver circuits for these displays are part of the development programme. In addition, thin film transistor (TFT) technology for use in active matrix EL-displays is studied. The technology could also be applied to integrate the driver circuits on the display panel itself.

Minitel videotex terminals equipped with EL displays are developed to demonstrate that the displays meet the required standards.

Key Issues

- Development of the technology for cost-effective, reliable, high-performance monochromatic electro- luminescent thin films and the corresponding driving arrangements.
- Development of efficient red, green and blue phosphors for a multi-colour EL display.
- Development of a technology to combine the three primary colours in the same EL display
- Development of high voltage row and column drivers for monochrome, grey shade and colour EL displays using BCD technology.
- Development of CdSe thin film transistor technology for active matrix and integrated display driver use. Achievements
- A yellow 384 x 280 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 235 x 170 mm2, 16 grey shades and video interface (1988)
- A yellow 640 x 480 pixel matrix EL display production prototype with an active area of 211 x 158 mm2 and 16 grey shades (1989)
- A yellow 1024 x 768 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 297 x 233 mm2 (1989)
- A green 320 x 256 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 96 x 77 mm2 (1989)
- A yellow 1024 x 768 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 297 x 233 mm2 and 16 grey shades (1990)
- The first samples of a 64 output integrated EL column driver (1990)
- A green 640 x 200 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 195 x 122 mm2 and sufficient brightness for making a multi-colour display (1990)
- A red 640 x 200 pixel matrix EL display demonstrator with an active area of 195 x 122 mm2 and sufficient brightness for making a multi-colour display (1990)
- The first samples of a 40 output integrated EL row driver (1991)
- A red-green (2 x 640) x 200 pixel matrix multi-colour display demonstrator (1991)
- A small size blue phosphor demonstrator with sufficient brightness for a multi-colour display (1991)

Expected Impact

The development of colour electro-luminescent flat panel displays with associated integrated drivers will establish a European supply of advanced displays for telecommunication terminals.
