Subscriber Coherent Multichannel System

Objectif

The main objective of this project is to demonstrate the technical and techno-economic feasibility of coherent multichannel (CMC) techniques in the customer access connection (CAC) and the customer premises network (CPN). The results of the project will show that the use of coherent transmission allows a very transparent and flexible evolution from a first generation of optical local networks to future generations, while at the same time accepting almost any service/application scenario.

Apart from providing evidence for technical feasibility, the project also participates in discussions on the introduction and the evolution of optical networks, based on the available expertise in system-related issues. The transparency and flexibility mentioned above form the basis of these discussions.

Apart from providing evidence for technical feasibility, the project also participates in discussions on the introduction and the evolution of optical networks, based on the available expertise in system related issues.
On the level of networks/transmission systems, the project demonstrates that CMC techniques are compatible with any other transmission of multiplexing technique and that they allow for a flexible evolution in networking and in services.
On the subsystem/component level, the project shows that CMC techniques are a realistic option and that today such systems can be produced according to predefined specifications.

A demonstrator has been completed and it has been in full operation since June 1991. Important progress has been made in electooptic devices and optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEIC)
Technical Approach

Evidence for the technical feasibility of the CMC concept is provided by a demonstrator, which was officially opened on June 21, 1991 in the GEC-Marconi Materials Technology Laboratory in Caswell, UK.

In this demonstrator, partners participating in the project have provided twelve coherent transmitters, two of which are used as a reference, whereas the others are all modulated by a digital video signal at 140 Mbit/s. The modulated optical signals are combined in an optical coupling network, and transmitted to (potentially) 1000 customers. Three customers have been implemented in the demonstrator, each one equipped with one or two coherent receivers, which can select any one out of the ten transmitted TV channels. The separation between the channels is 10 GHz. This demonstrator has been built according to specifications agreed upon in 1989, and all partners involved have delivered their coherent transmitter and receiver units according to these specifications and the basic demonstrator has been completed half a year earlier than planned.

A large fraction of the resources of the project has been (and will be) devoted to the development of advanced opto-electronic components, so as to allow for compact, well-engineered sub-systems. In this domain various world records in terms of laser tunability, laser linewidth, losses in integrated waveguides etc have been established.

It should be stressed that all component activities are continuously being tuned to system requirements.

Key Issues

- On the level of networks/transmission systems, the project demonstrates that CMC techniques are compatible with any other transmission or multiplexing technique and that they allow for a flexible evolution in networking and in services.
- On the subsystem/component level, the project shows that CMC techniques are a realistic option and that today such systems can be produced by various partners according to predefined specifications.

Achievements

- Demonstrator completed, and in full operation since June 1991.
- Important progress in electro-optic devices and OEICs.
- Fourth report on CMC Broadband Customer Access.

Expected Impact

The impact of the acceptance of CMC techniques will be at various levels. On the level of the network, the main impact will be that services may not be fully integrated, which will be an advantage for the introduction and evolution of IBC, because of the inherent flexibility.

The progress made (and expected) in the development of advanced opto-electronic components will have an important impact on all future optical communication systems.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
