Domestic Customer Premises Network

Objectif

The domestic CPN is a strategic area for the whole IBC network, because a full and rather rapid penetration of broadband services in the domestic environment will be the main motivation for the evolution of the public telecommunication network. The main objective of this project is to prepare economic, technically practical, and ergonomic solutions for future CPNs in the domestic area.
The domestic customer premises network (CPN) is a strategic area for the whole integrated broadband communication (IBC) network, because a full and rather rapid penetration of broadband services in the domestic environment will be the main motivation for the evolution of the public telecommunication network. The main objective of this project is to prepare economic, technically practical and ergonomic solutions for future CPN in the domestic area. The main achievements of the project to date have been: to define requirements for a domestic CPN and elaborate from this, a flexible and modular domestic customer premises network (DCPN) architecture, to specify the internal and external interfaces of the DCPN, and a low cost optical transmission link, to specify generic functional blocks to be implemented in future very large scale integration (VLSI), to specify network oriented and service adaption functions for future IBC terminals and adaptors to a non-IBC environment, to elaborate and prototype a user dialogue concept and finally to estimate costs for DCPN implementations, based on the demonstrator(s) presently under construction and test.
Results of project development include: application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) implementing the functions of the transmission convergence sublayer for a cell based interface; coaxial and optical transmission systems; distribution/concentration and switching functions; DCPN control and management functions; user control and user dialogue facilities; network and terminal adaptors.
Technical Approach

The project contains work packages for the study, practical modelling, and cost/performance evaluation of sample solutions for a complete home network installation.

The first part of the project (years 1 and 2) produced a detailed system concept for a domestic CPN, combining top-down and bottom-up approaches. Several implementation scenarios for a domestic CPN were investigated, in terms of preliminary design considerations and complexity/cost evaluations. This took into account the results of other RACE projects and the progress in standardisation activities. The system concept will be illustrated and its feasibility verified, by means of three feasibility models. This was specified at the end of 1989 and are currently being implemented. VLSI implementation of the main components will facilitate assessment of component costs, and verification of the cost-effectiveness of the overall system.

Key Issues

- Service definition and user dialogue for a user- friendly CPN.
- System topology and interfaces, supporting transmission via various types of optical fibres and cordless media.
- Adaptation of existing terminals.
- Design of a modular switching/multiplexing infrastructure and control unit
- Identification and evaluation of ICs for the implementation of key functional components of domestic CPNs.

Achievements

The main achievements of the project to date have been:
- to define requirements for a domestic CPN and elaborate from this, a flexible and modular D-CPN architecture
- to specify the internal and external interfaces of the DCPN, and a low-cost optical transmission link
- to specify generic functional blocks to be implemented in future VLSIs
- to specify network-oriented and service-adaptation functions for future IBC terminals and adaptors to a non- IBC environment
- to elaborate and prototype a user dialogue concept
- to estimate costs for DCPN implementations, based on the demonstrator(s) presently under construction and test.

Results of project development include: ASICs implementing the functions of the transmission convergence sublayer for a cell based interface; coaxial and optical transmission systems; distribution/ concentration and switching functions, DCPN control and management functions, user control and user dialogue facilities, network and terminal adaptors.

Expected Impact

The results of the project will influence technological development intended to facilitate the introduction of IBC in the domestic environment. These include the definition of services and proposed standards for S and T interfaces.

Programme(s)
