Development & Testing of Optical Components for Subscriber Networks

Objectif

Research was carried out into the establishment of enabling technology for low installation cost single fibre connectors, single fibre jointing system and multifibre jointing systems, and all fibre wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) couplers and related components.

The requirements for field test equipment, the impact of component costs and performance on network architectures were considered and preliminary studies on multifibre connectors and connectors for coherent systems were carried out. Requirements for field test equipment were also to be studied as these were recognized as a key element of the introduction of all fibre networks.
Technical Summary

The Draft RACE Workplan (OTR 100) recognised the importance of the introduction of optical fibre into the subscriber network. This project addressed the key aspect of enabling technologies for passive components. It also considered the requirements for field test equipment and, in concertation with other projects, the impact of component costs and performance on network architectures.

The programme of work included the establishment of enabling technology for low installed-cost single fibre connectors, single- and multi-fibre jointing systems, and all-fibre WDM couplers and related components. It also included preliminary studies on multi-fibre connectors and connectors for coherent systems. Requirements for field test equipment would also be studied as these were recognised as a key element of the introduction of all- fibre networks.
