Management of Personal Services Communications Space (PSCS)

Objetivo

The objective of MOBILISE is to define the personal services communication space (PSCS) concept, derive requirements for management and security, specify an architecture, build components for PSCS instances, and demonstrate PSCS managers and their use in applications. The PSCS integrates personal mobility with personal service management.
The objectives of the project were to define the personal services communication space (PSCS) concept, to derive requirements for management and security, to demonstrate PSCS arhitecture, to build components for specific PSCSs and to demonstrate PSCS managers and their use.

The key issues involved include:
locating and identifying users internationally, whether they are connected to a fixed network or a mobile network;
allowing access to a wide range of broadband and narrow band services in a heterogeneous environment, while maintaining a consistent user interface;
personalizing the service environment by means of a flexible service profile which contains all relevant information on the user's setup and preferences;
managing the users' customised profile of services in a secure manner and providing interfaces for management by both user and service provider.

To date a concept of PSCS derived from user needs for personal communication has been defined and a multimedia visualization of the main features of the PSCS has been produced.

A conceptual model for the PSCS service architecture has been defined and, within this framework, a PSCS enterprise model has been drawn up. Access and the PSCS service provider were identified as most important for further specification work.

The MOBILISE project has undertaken several in depth studies on key features of the PSCS:
PSCS usage and introduction scenarios;
registration and location management;
service management requirements;
security issues;
the initial definition of the flexible service profile.
Technical Approach

MOBILISE employs a user centred approach to derive requirements for PSCS functionality. Prototype components are being made and demonstrated in PSCS managers. A consensus will be formed on the chosen concept and architectures. As an extension, the realisation of PSCS in corporate network environments will be approached.

Results are to be presented in workshops and conferences, and as major contributions to common functional specifications, demonstrations and publications. Within the Intelligence in Networks Project Line, MOBILISE will act as an interface at the service level to the Mobile Project Line.

Key Issues

- Locating and identifying users internationally, whether they are connected to a fixed network or a mobile network.
- Maintaining a consistent user interface to services in a heterogeneous terminal and network environment.
- Flexible Service Profile, to support personalisation
- Managing the users' customised profile of services in a secure manner and providing management interfaces.

Expected Impact

The project's aim of providing business users with transparent access to a personalised profile of services on an international scale is an essential component of the functionality of IBC environments. Ongoing standardisation efforts for UPT and IN are expected to be influenced by the personal communication features envisaged for PSCS. The latter is considered to be the natural evolutionary target for mobile networks.
