Pilot Applications on a Gigabit European Integrated Network

Objectif

PAGEIN aims to demonstrate, exploit and characterise key features of High Performance Computing (HPC) on IBC usage by the aerospace industries. Computational Fluid Dynamics has been taken as typical activity of the pre-design phase be carried-on by a multi-site, multi-company, European conception team. Super computers of different architectures situated in different countries are utilised to tackle complex tasks which would be otherwise intractable.
The main objective of the research were to characterize, demonstrate and exploit some key features of high performance computing (HPC) on integrated broadband communications (IBC) usage by the aerospace industries. Computational fluid dynamics and industrial predesign were addressed on a European scale by expert teams. Supercomputers of different architectures situated in different countries were utilized to tackle complex tasks which would be otherwise intractable.

The research resulted in the following:
definition of project requirements, common architecture, and communications topology for experimenting with high performance computing and IBC usage by the aerospace industries was completed;
the user requirements specific to aerospace networking have made a significant contribution to an advisory committee on high performance computing;
a proposal synthesizing various European aerospace industry experiments was evaluated in the optical network interconnection call;
a rapid prototype of collaborative visualization using multimedia was demonstrated.
Technical Approach

Users have closely followed development teams who have transformed existing applications into heterogeneous distributed applications, taking into consideration results of R1038 and R2060 as well as those of Brite Euram Aero 0006 and IMT3 AER2-CT92-0031. Testbeds have been set up, using transitory PDH technology, partly developed by PAGEIN partners. ATM technology was also introduced on testbeds to prepare the evolution of PTO technologies. On these testbeds a significant number of experiments take place in parallel. This approach is comparable with that of the Gigabit Testbed programme in the United States.

PAGEIN in 1995 concentrates on the diffusion of the collaboration and distribution concepts among an extended group of industrial partners.

Key Issues

- Establishment and mapping of real end user services onto a multi-Mbit/s trans-European network interconnection.
- Demonstration of co-operative heterogeneous super computing (meta-computers) over European distances.
- Demonstration of Collaborative Visualisation Applications, supported by multimedia technologies.
- Cross fertilising of end users and network designers.
- Early cross-border usage of ATM communications.

Expected Impact

PAGEIN should result in a significant contribution to Europe's ability for usage of IBC to solve key problems of co-operation with controlled sharing of technology. A major impact will be to demonstrate to PTOs and the IBC community that increased computation power, expected to spread widely in the coming five years, can generate increased communication needs.

Development of a fully operational environment for distributed design applications is a large investment for early users. Justification of such investment requires further convincing steps: progress towards operational usage in the community of potential aeronautical users demands both an enlarged consensus and an enlarged communication basis. Such actions will be the basis of the 1995 activity.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
