Surface treatment by ionic implantation

Objective

This project aims to:

- identify all the Community institutes, university laboratories and companies working in ion beam techniques (including manufacturers of ion implanters) and compile a European database.
- contact potential users.
- select applications among the interested companies and carry out demonstrations.
- publish the results of these tests.
- produce a report describing the level of interest reached.

Ionic surface treatment (eg ion implantation) is an effective method of improving metallic surface properties to prolong the lifetime of tools and mechanical pieces without the negative characteristics of coatings, such as poor adhesion and dimensional changes.
