Objective
The aim of the project is to reduce the current heating and cooling requirements of two different housing buildings (10 floor and 4 floor), by 86% and 35-40% respectively. In order to achieve these targets, innovative technologies will be incorporated, such as :
- External insulation of all facades
- Integration of passive solar systems
- Installation of water solar system
- Photovoltaic panels.
The project concerns the design, construction and extensive monitoring of two typical public housing units in the area of Tavros. - Type A represents the older type of units built around 1950. These are bar-shaped 4-store buildings, with simplified and standardised construction. They have no insulation or central heating and have been extensively modified by tenants, who are also in most cases the owners of each apartment. In the area of Tavros there are 6 buildings of this type.
- Type B is a more recent type of building built around 1960. It is a 10-store building with a more elaborated construction and central heating. These units have a basic disadvantage in the orientation of the apartments, which face mostly east-west orientation and have little south exposure. In the area of Tavros there are 10 buildings of this type.
1. The design of the retrofitting measures for the two buildings will include the following :
- passive solar design features
- external insulation of walls and roofs
- natural ventilation strategy design
- design of glazing for daylighting
- internal air quality studies
- civil engineering metal constructions
- solar air heaters design
- solar water design
- photovoltaics
- electrical and mechanical systems design
- plumbing and electrical installations
2. In addition to the design, simulations will be carried out concerning :
- the thermal performance of the building before and after the proposed interventions
- the daylight availability after the retrofitting
- the natural ventilation strategy
- the indoor climatic conditions
3. Additional calculations will be carried out for :
- solar water heaters performance and
- photovoltaics performance
4. Setting of specifications
The specifications and standards for the construction and installation of the passive and active solar features will be produced in order to prepare them for a public call for tenders
