Objective
TO ENSURE A BETTER SURFACE WATER QUALITY, A GENERAL UPGRADING OF THE WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS TO INCLUDE NUTRIENT REMOVAL HAS BEEN INITIATED ALL OVER EUROPE.
USUALLY, THE TREATMENT WILL BE BASED 0N THE ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS. IN THIS PROCESS THE SEPARATION 0F THE ACTIVATED SLUDGE FROM THE TREATED WASTEWATER CAN BE HINDERED BY AN EXCESSIVE GROWTH OF FILAMENTOUS BACTERIA - LEADING TO SLUDGE ESCAPE FROM THE TREATMENT PLANT AND p0OR TREATMENT EFFICIENCY. THIS PHENOMENON IS REFERRED TO AS FILAMENTOUS BULKING AND MUST BE REGARDED AS THE MAIN PENDING PROBLEM IN CONNECTION WITH THE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF TREATMENT PLANT.
A FAIRLY GOOD STRATEGY HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO CONTROL BULKING IN CONVENTIONAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS, BUT So FAR, THIS STRATEGY HAS NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN NUTRIENT REMOVAL PLANTS.
THE OBJECT oF THIS PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH A CONTROL STRATEGY FOR FILAMENTOUS BULKING IN NUTRIENT REMOVAL PLANTS BY AN OPTIMISATION OF THE FLOW PATTERN, WHICH SEEMS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CONTROLLING FACTORS. IN THE PROJECT THE PERFORMANCE OF EXISTING NUTRIENT REMOVAL PLANTS IN EUROPE WILL BE INVESTIGATED, WHICH - IN COMBINATION WITH STUDIES IN LABORATORIES - WILL LEAD To THE FORMATION OF A CONTROL STRATEGY WHICH CAN BE TESTED IN EXISTING FULL-SCALE PLANTS.
THE PROJECT GROUP NOT ONLY REPRESENTS THE FRONT LINE CONCERNING FILAMENTOUS BULKING IN EUROPE. THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE PARTNERS ALSO MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO TAKE THE VARIOUS WASTEWATER COMPOSITIONS AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS WITHIN EUROPE INTO ACCOUNT.
