Upgrading of high moisture, low rank coals to hydrogen and methane

Objective

The project proposed aims to develop a new integrated process for upgrading high moisture, low rank brown coals to three product streams:

(1) A fuel gas mainly consisting of methane and hydrogen, which is called 'HyMet gas'. This gas can be used as a substitute for natural gas for high efficient power generation with fuel cells as well as for gas turbines with very low CO2 emissions due to the high hydrogen content.
(2) By- products of the process are precalcinated feed for a cement kiln and a pure CO2 gas stream facilitating CO2 removal from this process.

First experiments show the feasibility of the new process. Within the proposed project the basic development will be done to assess the technological viability. Furthermore the economic advantages compared to conventional brown coal utilisation as well as design parameters of a pilot plant will be delivered.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
