Objective
INCOSTEEL project aims to optimise in-line detection of surface defects produced in the manufacture of of hot wire steel. Material assessment is carried out at 1200ºC, when wire passes at a speed of 120m/s. Existing systems present some limitations regarding detection and characterisation of several types of common defects (mainly, longitudinal ones).
The project proposes the use of more advanced electromagnetic and ultrasonic techniques and sensors (multi-frequency eddy current techniques and EC array sensors and EMATs) to deal with this problem.
Models based on Finite Elements will be used for designing techniques and sensors (reducing the number of prototypes to develop).
