CONTROL OF SUSPENSION POLYMERISATION REACTIONS: PRODUCTION OF POROUS MICROPARTICLES WITH DESIRABLE PROPERTIES

Objetivo


This research investigates problems related to the formation, structure, suspension stability, modelling and control of molecular and morphological properties of polymer microparticles. These problems are examined in relation to the suspension polymerisation of vinyl chloride and the slurry/precipitation polymerisation of acrylonitrile based copolymers. To date the following results have been obtained:
a detailed kinetic model for the suspension and bulk polymerisation of vinyl chloride microparticles (VCM);
mathematical models describing the aggregation phenomena in VCM polymerisation;
a generalised model for prediction of particle size distribution in agitated vessels;
comprehensive kinetic models for linear and branched copolymers;
design and construction of bench scale and pilot plant reactors;
development of necessary computer based methods for the characterisation of particulate polymers;
an experimental investigation of acrylonitrile polymerisation using redox free radical initiation;
modelling of primary particle formation in slurry polymerisation of acrylonitrile;
experimental evaluation of molecular and morphological properties of particulate polymers.

The goals of this project were to investigate problems related to the formation, suspension stability, modelling and control of molecular and morphological properties of polymer microparticles. Thus, the physical chemical phenomena which control the particle size distribution and internal particle morphology (ie pore size distribution and surface area) were examined in relation to the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride and the slurry precipitin polymerization of acrylonitrile based copolymers.

These objectives were achieved by a multidisciplinary theoretical approach aiming at the:
development and verification of comprehensive polymerization, microscopic particle macroscopic particle morphology models;
design and operation of bench scale polymerization reactors;
development of necessary software for computer aided operation of polymer reactors and on line product characterization;
design and construction of a pilot scale polymerization reactor to study the scale up effects.
PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE FORMATION, STRUCTURE, SUSPENSION STABILITY, MODELLING AND CONTROL OF MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMER MICROPARTICLES ARE INVESTIGATED.
THESE PROBLEMS ARE EXAMINED IN RELATION TO THE SUSPENSION POLYMERIZATION VINYL CHLORIDE AND THE SLURRY-PRECIPITATION POLYMERIZATION OF ACRYLONATRILE-BASED COPOLYMERS. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME ARE TO DEVELOP:
- COMPREHENSIVE KINETIC MODELS FOR PVC AND ACRYLONITRILE-BASED COPOLYMERS,- MICROSCOPIC AND MACROSCOPIC PARTICLE MORPHOLOGY MODELS,
- NEW IMPROVED COMPUTER-BASED ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR ON-LINE AND OFF-LINE CHARACTERIZATION OF PARTICULATE POLYMERS,
- NEW METHODS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYMER MICROPARTICLES WITH DESIRABLE PROPERTIES.
