SELF STRATIFYING COATINGS

Objetivo

This research project developed techniques for producing self-stratifying paint coatings. Project partners gained a theoretical understanding of the stratification process and developed a model for predicting the probability of stratification, based on selected physical parameters of the component polymers.

An overview of the research highlights:

- A comprehensive database of the physical parameters of polymers and resins used in surface coatings was developed.

- The project demonstrated that self-stratifying coatings can be formulated from currently-available resins and polymers. Medium- and high-solid solution coatings, suitable for commercial exploitation, are likely to be heterogeneous liquid-in-liquid dispersions, where each phase contains the appropriate pigments separately dispersed within it.

- This research demonstrated theoretical understanding of self-stratification, which encompassed polymer solubility, surface tension relationships and kinetic aspects of film formation.

- The location of pigments in the separate layers has not been achieved reproducibly. Further study of the relation between surface treatments and their affinity for different polymers is required.

- Practical and industrial applications of stratification were investigated. While there were difficulties in adjusting viscosity and solvent evaporation, there was no major obstacle to applying self-stratifying coatings. Self-stratifying coatings can be developed from aqueous polymer dispersions.

1.- TO FORMULATE EXPERIMENTAL SELF-STRATIFYING COATINGS, ON THE BASIS OF PRELIMINARY SCREENED RESIN FAMILIES, IN PARTICULAR TO DEVELOP LIQUID PIGMENTED SYSTEMS. SELF-STRATIFYING SYSTEMS WILL BE FORMULATED FOR STEEL, PLASTICS AND WOOD. RESEARCH WILL BE FOCUSED ON THE SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE VARIABLES GOVERNING STRATIFICATION, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS (VIZ, RESINS, SOLVENTS, PIGMENTS AND ADDITIVES), LENGTH AND CONDITIONS OF CURE, FILM THICKNESS, AND ANY, AS YET UNKNOWN, EXTERNAL TRIGGER, BE IT MOISTURE, HEAT OR ATMOSPHERIC CONSTITUENT.

2.- TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF APPLICATION TECHNIQUE ON STRATIFICATION.

3.- TO CHARACTERISE PROMISING STRATIFYING COATINGS AT BOTH THE FILM FORMATION AND DRY FILM STAGES. THIS SYSTEMATIC CHARACTERISATION WILL CONSIST OF INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE PRESENCE AND EXTENT OF STRATIFICATION: STANDARD PERFORMANCE TESTS TO ASSESS THE PHYSICO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF DRY FILMS; AND ENVIRONMENTAL TESTS TO EVALUATE THE DURABILITY AND AGEING BEHAVIOUR OF APPLIED COATINGS.

4.- TO ESTABLISH A MODEL OF THE SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES GOVERNING STRATIFICATION ON THE BASIS OF WHICH INDUSTRY COULD DEVELOP PROPRIETARY SYSTEMS. THE INPUT FOR THIS MODEL WILL BE DERIVED FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK OF THE PARTICIPATING ORGANISATIONS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF RESEARCH.
