SELF STRATIFYING COATINGS

CORDIS provides links to public deliverables and publications of HORIZON projects.

Links to deliverables and publications from FP7 projects, as well as links to some specific result types such as dataset and software, are dynamically retrieved from OpenAIRE .

Exploitable results

Self stratifying coatings have been developed which allow two different functional coats to be applied in one operation. Anexample would be an anticorrosive primer anf a durable top caot. The systems offer time and cost saving benefits as well as a technological benefit due to the lack of a distinct interface between the two layers where delimination could occur. Coating suitable for wood, plastic and metal substrates have been investigated. The effect of pigmentation and additives, such as curing agents has been characterised. Mathematical models and statistical models, based on the physical properties of polymers and solvents involved, allow the probability of stratification to be predicted for a given pair of polymers in a known solvent or solvent blend. The technology has potential applications in adhesives, inks and plastics as well as coatings.
