Objective
By using the latest theory of fluid flows in engines and combining it with existing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, this project created software models for engine design. The software, which uses two different methods, provides models delineating the behaviour of gas in large engines during the intake, compression, and exhaust strokes. Experimental engines have been built to collect additional data to validate the software models.
ENHANCING EFFICIENCY OF LARGE DIESEL ENGINES AS WELL AS DESIGNING GEOMETRIES FOR NEW SPARK IGNITION GAS ENGINES NEED THE AVAILABILITY OF AN INDUSTRIAL COMPUTER SIMULATION TOOL PREDICTING THE AERODYNAMIC TURBULENT FLOW IN THE CYLINDER.
THE MAJOR FEATURES OF THE PROJECT ARE:
- MODELLING THE REAL GEOMETRIES AND REAL MOVEMENT OF THE VALVES AND PISTON HEAD,
- MODELLING THE PIPE NETWORKS AS WELL AS THE UNSTEADY RESPONSE OF THE TURBOCHARGER,
- PERFORMING LDV MEASUREMENTS ON TRANSPARENT PISTON HEAD ENGINE,- COMPARING VARIOUS TURBULENCE MODELS AND VALIDATING A SELECTED ONE AGAINST MEASUREMENTS,
- PERFORMING OVERALL COMPARISONS WITH MEASUREMENTS ON REAL ENGINES,- TESTING EFFECTS OF GEOMETRICAL AND/OR OPERATING CONDITIONS MODIFICATIONS ON GLOBAL EFFICIENCY FROM EXPERIMENTAL POINT OF VIEW AS WELL AS COMPUTATIONAL APPROACH.
THE ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- AT BERTIN: THE DEVELOPMENT OF A 3D FINITE ELEMENT FLUID MECHANICS SOFTWARE IS WELL ADVANCED,
- AT CHAM: THE PHOENICS CODE WILL BE USED AS A STARTING POINT,- AT RUSTON DIESELS: THE TEST RIG ON WHICH OVERALL MEASUREMENTS WILL TAKE PLACE IS NOW AVAILABLE,
- AT UNIVERSITA DELLA CALABRIA: ALL THE ACQUISITION DATA SOFTWARE IS DEVELOPED AND MEASUREMENTS ARE NOW FEASIBLE.
