Objectif
A CAD system was successfully developed and validated which integrates the various aspects of the design process for controlled brushless permanent magnet drive systems. The designer can use this to select a topology and materials and apply formal calculations to optimize the design. A preferred design, which meets user requirements, can then be chosen.
A SIGNIFICANT TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IS OCCURING IN DRIVE SYSTEMS ARISING FROM THE CONFLUENCE OF PERMANENT MAGNET MATERIAL AND SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE TECHNOLOGIES. IN PARTICULAR THE COMMERCIALISATION OF ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF NEODYMIUM-IRON-BORON MAGNETS OFFERS THE PROMISE OF TANTALISING NEW DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES AND IMPROVED PERFORMANCE. THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN IMPROVEMENTS IN DESIGN METHODS WHICH, ALTHOUGH MATHEMATICALLY COMPLEX, ARE SUITABLE FOR INCLUSION IN A CAD FACILITY FOR ROUTINE DESIGN OFFICE USE.
INDEED, SUCH A FACILITY, WHICH WILL PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR ECONOMIC AND RELIABLE DESIGNS, IS SEEN AS VITAL TO EUROPEAN INDUSTRY, SINCE IT WILL ALLOW ENGINEERS TO RAPIDLY ASSESS THE MERITS OF ALTERNATIVE DRIVE SYSTEMS FOR INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED APPLICATIONS, THUS REDUCING THE LEAD TIME ON NEW PRODUCTS. THE MAJOR OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP A CAD PACKAGE WHICH, APART FROM AIDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRUSHLESS MOTORS AND ACTUATORS, MANY OF WHICH WILL HAVE RADICALLY DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS TO MAKE EFFECTIVE USE OF ALTERNATIVE PERMANENT MAGNET MATERIALS, WILL LINK THE MOTOR DESIGN TO THE CONVERTER DESIGN AND SYSTEM SIMULATION PROCESSES, SO THAT SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION MAY BE UNDERTAKEN.
USING THE DESIGN METHODOLOGY ESTABLISHED, THE POTENTIAL FOR ALTERNATIVE TOPOLOGIES AND DRIVE CONTROL STRATEGIES WILL BE ASSESSED FOR APPLICATIONS EMBRACING SPECIFIC CONSUMER AND PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS, AND RULES DEVELOPED TO GUIDE THE SELECTION OF DESIGN PARAMETERS.
