An advanced fluid dynamics code for computing cyclones has been developed in order to improve the design and performance of cyclones and other centrifugal separators. Cyclones are commonly used in various industrial installations in order to clean air flows, by removing particles. Its main advantages are the absence of moving parts, low energy consumption and the possibility of nonstop and high temperature operation. Theoretical studies were carried out concerning turbulence and shape effect on particle drag, agglomeration and thermophoresis. Experimental studies were performed including laser Doppler velocimetry in a Stairmand cyclone, grade efficiency and pressure drop of an industrial cyclone and the operating characteristics at high temperature for cyclones used on 2 fluidized bed coal burners. The new built CYCLOP code has a Navier-Stokes 2-dimensional/3-dimensional solver for turbulent swirling flows based on control volume and collocated approach on curvilinear grids. This user friendly software is functional in 3-dimensions and fairly well validated in 2-dimensions and includes grid generation for cyclones and good graphics facilities. The project has developed a better knowledge of the physics of cyclones and in two-phase flow calculations.
