DEVELOPMENT OF METHODOLOGIES BASED ON REAL TIME INTELLIGENT ON LINE MULTI CHANNEL DATA ACQUISITION

Objetivo

2 software tools have been developed that can be integrated into industrial software presently being used. The 2 tools are finite element method (FEM) model updating and damage analysis. The technological potential of these new tools is the possiblity of calculating the performance of complicated structures when exposed to loads that are difficult to predict. The tools can be used in the design phase of new products, for optimizing existing and well known products, for lifetime prediction of complicated structures under given conditions and for remaining life assessments based on measurements of actual stress conditions. The software is targered for structures undergoing dynamic fatigue, an area that has been particularly difficult to address in the past. The software provides for dynamic modelling and provides random stress predictions based on sensitivity and direct energy approaches. The sensitivity method allows force updating. Extensive software validation has been performed mainly for FEM model updating software both on numerical benchmarks and complex maritime and automobile structures. Although valuable progress has been made in the project, there is still work to be done including improving comparison tools, improving the tools so that they locate errors more effectively and enhancing the scope of some of the strategies of the tools.

The numerical techniques used for predicting the life expectancy of components undergoing vibrational fatigue are of limited accuracy when the behaviour of the structure or the actual service loads are not well known. Lifetime expectancy prediction can be improved by incorporating measurements made during operation of the actual structure or of a prototype. This should allow definition of modifications to a prototype or of the service maintenance inspection programme for an actual structure.

The application of these developments is with structures undergoing dynamic fatigue and particularly where dynamic modelling is difficult or stresses are of a random nature making them hardly predictable at the design stage.

Methods and computational tools have been developed which allow the enrichment of numerical models with experimental results. Developments of general applicability were in the areas of finite element method (FEM) model updating, force updating, damage analysis and integration of software tools.

The techniques have been validated on industrial cases and are ready for integration into industrial software packages.
