Objective
In order to keep the levels of aflatoxin M1 in milk acceptably low, the levels of its precursor, aflatoxin B1 in cattle feed are controlled. Peanut meal, an important component of animal feed, is particularly vulnerable to attack by the moulds which produce aflatoxin B1 and imports are consequently subject to routine monitoring both by official laboratories and the animal feed industry.
Two intercomparisons have been undertaken and have led to considerable improvement in interlaboratory agreement. The second study involving 18 laboratories showed, in particular, the importance of allowing for incomplete recovery. Excellent agreement was achieved with a coefficient of variation of 9% at a level of 44 ug/kg. Three peanut meal reference materials (RM) have been prepared and have shown to be acceptably homogenous. The materials are made from naturally contaminated samples and have an aflatoxin B1 content of 2 ug/kg (an effective blank), 50 and 180 ug/kg, levels corresponding to Community limits. Stability was confirmed and the certification study completed.
In order to keep the levels of aflatoxin M1 in milk acceptably low, the levels of its precursor, aflatoxin B1 in cattle feed are controlled through Community legislation (DIR 74/63/EEC et seq.). Peanut meal, an important component of animal feed, is particularly vulnerable to attack by the moulds which produce aflatoxin B1 and imports are consequently subject to routine monitoring both by official laboratories and the animal feed industry.
