Objective
THE MAIN AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO VALIDATE NON0DESTRUCTIVE DEFECT DETECTION TECHNIQUES ON ACTUAL STRUCTURES, FOR EXAMPLE THE ONE-FIFTH SCALE VESSELS AT THE JRC. IT IS ALSO INTENDED TO COMPARE SUCH RESULTS WITH THOSE OBTAINED BY OTHER LABORATORIES USING DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES TESTED ON THE SAME VESSELS.
THE DATA COLLECTED ON THE BASIS OF SUCH MEASUREMENTS COULD ALSO BE USED FOR THE STRUCTURAL RELIABILITY BENCHMARK EXERCISE (ACTIVITY 3.1.).
IN THIS PROJECT FRAMATOME IS TO CHARACTERISE AND SIZE THE INDICATIONS PRESENTED, MAINLY IN THE WALL THICKNESS, BY VESSELS A AND C AT THE JRC'S ISPRA ESTABLISHMENT.
THE INDICATIONS ARE OBTAINED FROM NON-DESTRUCTIVE INSPECTIONS, MAINLY USING ULTRASOUND, CARRIED OUT ON THE VESSELS BY TEAMS UNCONNECTED WITH FRAMATOME. FRAMATOME WILL ALSO INSPECT THE WELD BEADS ON THE TWO NOZZLES IN VESSELS A AND C BY MEANS OF A MANUAL ULTRASONIC METHOD USING A SENSOR IN CONTACT WITH THE PART.
THE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT ISPRA IN FOUR CAMPAIGNS EACH LASTING ONE WEEK:
- TWO CAMPAIGNS TO TAKE PLACE IN 1986 ON VESSEL A, WHICH COMPRISES 15 INTENTIONAL DEFECTS;
- TWO CAMPAIGNS TO TAKE PLACE IN 1987 ON VESSEL C, WHICH COMPRISES ONLY UNINTENTIONAL DEFECTS THAT ARE ACCEPTABLE INDER THE ASME CODE (APPROXIMATELY SIX INDICATIONS).

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
