Objective
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMME WILL BE TO STUDY MULTICOMPONENT AEROSOL BEHAVIOUR WITHIN THE MINIATURE PRIMARY SYSTEM AND CONTAINMENT. A KEY ASPECT OF THIS PROPOSAL IS THAT IT INCORPORATES BOTH EXPERIMENTAL WORK AND COMPUTER MODELLING OF THE PHENOMENA. THE EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY IS FLEXIBLE AND AMENABLE TO MODIFICATION SO THAT SPECIFIC PHENOMENA CAN BE STUDIED.
THUS, IT SHOULD BE EMPHASISED THAT THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION OF THE INDIVIDUAL SEGMENTS OF THE PROGRAMME DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY CAN BE TREATED IN ISOLATION; RATHER, THE VARIOUS ELEMENTS COMPLEMENT ONE ANOTHER.
A KEY ASPECT OF THIS PROPOSAL IS THAT IT INCORPORATES BOTH EXPERIMENTAL WORK AND COMPUTER CODE ANALYSIS. THE EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY IS FLEXIBLE AND AMENABLE TO MODIFICATION SO THAT SPECIFIC PHENOMENA CAN BE EXAMINED.
THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK WILL BE SUPPORTED BY THERMODYNAMIC CALCULATIONS OF THE CHEMICAL SPECIATION IN THIS MULTICOMPONENT, MULTIPHASE SYSTEM, TOGETHER WITH AN ASSESSMENT OF THE RELEVANT THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC DATA. COMPUTER CODE ANALYSIS WILL BE UNDERTAKEN USING BOTH PRIMARY CIRCUIT AND CONTAINMENT CODES TOGETHER WITH HAND CALCULATIONS TO ASSESS THE THERMAL-HYDRAULIC CONDITIONS WITHIN THE APPARATUS.
THESE CALCULATIONS WILL ENSURE THAT THE EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS SIMULATE SO FAR AS POSSIBLE THE KEY PHENOMENA PERTAINING IN A SEVERE REACTOR ACCIDENT, AND ENABLE THE COMPUTER CODES TO BE TESTED AND DEVELOPED AGAINST SMALL-SCALE INTEGRAL EXPERIMENTS PRIOR TO ANALYSIS OF THE PHEBUS-FP TESTS. A FURTHER OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSAL IS TO DEVELOP A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES TO CHARACTERISE FISSION PRODUCT AND AEROSOL TRANSPORT AND DEPOSITION; AGAIN, THE RESULTS OF THESE INSTRUMENT DEVELOPMENT STUDIES WILL BE OF DIRECT RELEVANCE TO PHEBUS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
