DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF A METHOD OF PREDICTING AND ASSESSING PERFORMANCE OF OPERATING AIR SEPARATORS IN THE PROCESSING OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE

Objective



THE PRIMARY AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO INVESTIGATE AND DEVELOP A RELIABLE PROCEDURE FOR EVALUATION OF AIR SEPARATOR PERFORMANCE THAT CAN BE RELATED TO AND USED IN THE REAL OPERATING CONDITIONS PREVAILING IN REFUSE SEPARATION.
A SECONDARY AIM, OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO THE PRACTICALITY OF THE PROCEDURE,IS TO ELIMINATE HAND SORTING OF REFUSE AS A MEANS OF ASSESSING THE PERFORMANCE OF AN AIR SEPARATOR ON A REGULAR BASIS.
THE APPROACH TO BE FOLLOWED, FREQUENTY TERMED "RELEASE ANALYSIS", IS TO BE BASED ON PROCEDURES DEVELOPED IN THE MINERAL PROCESSING FIELD WHEN VARIABILITY IN FEED CONDITIONS HAS PRECLUDED THE USE OF STRAIGHT ASSAY DATA (E.G. METAL CONTENT) IN THE ASSESSEMENT OF HOW A MATERIAL WILL REACT TO A GIVEN SEPARATION PROCESS. THIS APPROACH USES GRADE AND RECOVERY DATA OBTAINED ON A STANDARD TEST SEPARATOR (AN ANALOGUE OF THE PLANT PROCESSING EQUIPMENT ) USING A STANDARD PROCEDURE AT A NUMBER OF PRESET SEPARATION INTENSITIES . THE RESULTING SEPARATED FRACTIONS DEFINE THE MAXIMUM SEPARATION ATTAINABLE FOR THE MATERIAL UNDER CONSIDERATION. IT IS AGAINST THIS "STANDARD BASE LINE" THAT PERFORMANCE OF THE OPERATING EQUIPMENT IS MEASURED AND NOT THE ABSOLUTE ASSAY VALUES OBTAINED IN FEED AND PRODUCT SAPLES.
THE APPLICATION OF THIS APPROACH TO AIR SEPARATION OF REFUSE AND THE RESULTS SHOULD ENABLE OPTIMISATION OF AIR SEPARATOR PERFORMANCE, ALSO THE ASSESMENT OF SEPARATION EFFICIENCIES AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN RELATION TO PARTICULAR OR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS (I.E. FIBRE RECYCLING, PLASTICS RECYCLING OR "FUEL" PRODUCTION). IN ADDITION THE STUDY WILL POINT TO ASPECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGY WHERE DESIGN IMPROVEMENT MAY BE REQUIRED FOR MORE COST EFFECTIVE SEPARATION.
