PRODUCTION OF METHANE BY ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF DOMESTICS REFUSE.

Objective

THE RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON TWO TOPICS:
1. EVALUATION OF ENHANCED BIOMETHANATION BY APPROPRIATE PRETREATMENTS OF THE DOMESTIC REFUSE. THE PRETREATMENT PATTERNS WILL INCLUDE:
A) SHORT-TERM AEROBIC PRE-COMPOSTING IN MECHANICAL DEVICES (VERSTRAETE, RUG, GENT)
B) ANAEROBIC LIQUEFACTION (NYNS, LOUVAIN-LA-NEUVE, UCL)
2. DESIGN OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTORS (UP TO 50 LITERS) CAPABLE OF PROCESSING PRETREATED DOMESTIC REFUSE, EITHER AT MESOPHILIC OR THERMOPHILIC TEMPERATURES, PARTICULARLY ADAPTED TO 1.A. (RUG,GENT) AND TO 1.B. (UCL, LOUVAIN-LQ-NEUVE).
NEW TYPESOF CONTINUOUS ANAEROBIC DIGESTORS NEED TO BE DEVELOPED WHICH ALLOW THE PROCESSING OF DOMESTIC REFUSE AT AN OPTIMUM SOLIDS CONTENT (EITHER IN THE 10-30% RANGE OR IN THE 25-35% RANGE).
AN ADAPTED ANALYTCAL TOOL WILL HAVE TO BE SET UP IN ORDER TO ENSURE A PROPER PARAMETRISATION OF THE CONTINUOUS SEMI-SOLID PROCESS AS HAS BEEN DONE FOR LIAUID PROCESSES.
ANAEROBIC DIGESTION IN THERMOPHILIC CONDITIONS WILL BE STUDIED BECAUSE IT IS PARTICULARLY WELL SUITED FOR SEMI-SOLID SUBSTRATES (STABILITY, CELLULOSE UTILISATION, ENERGY BALANCE).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
