Objective
ALL SYSTEMS CURRENTLY IN USE OR UNDER DEVELOPMENT FOR RECOVERY OF RESOURCES OR FUEL FROM URBAN WASTES USE SIZE SEPARATION BY SCREENING, USUALLY A TROMMEL, AT SOME STAGE IN THE PROCESS AND YET THERE IS AN ALMOST COMPLETE LACK OF DATAON WITH DESIGN AND OPERATING PRINCIPLES CAN BE BASED. RECENT STUDIES BY NCRR WASHINGTON HAVE BEEN DIRECTED TOWARDS FORMULATION OF A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE SCREENING PROCESS IN AN ATTEMPT TO PREDICT PERFORMANCE OF INCLINED ROTARY TROMMELS IN THE SCREENING OF URBAN WASTE. PARTICIPATION IN THIS WORK HAS LED TO FORMULATION OF THIS PROPOSED RSEARCH PROJECT WHICH IS AIMED AT PROVIDING DATA OF MORE IMMEDIATE USE TO DESIGNERS AND OPERATORS OF RESOURCE RECOVERY PLANTS. USING PAST EXPERIENCE DETAILED PERFORMANCE STUDIES ON A PILOT SCALE TROMMEL AND ON SELECTED VIBRATORY SCREENS WILL BE COMPLETED AND THE RESULTS CORELATED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL REFUSE SCREENS OPERATING IN THE UK. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE ROLE OF LIFTERS AND SCROLLS IN PROMOTTING MATERIAL FLOW IN HORIZONTAL TROMMELS BECAUSE OF THEIR SIMPLICITY OF DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE, COMPARED WITH INCLINED TROMMELS. THE RANGE OF VARIABLES TO BE EXPLORED HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE EARLIER WORK.IT IS EXPECTED THAT THESE STUDIES WILL PROVIDE:
A) A DATA BASE FOR SELECTION OF OPTIMUM SCREEN TYPE AND DESIGN FOR SPECIFIED DUTY AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA;
B) DESIGN DATA TO ENABLE SCREEN CONSTRUCTION TO MEAT CRITICAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS;
C) OPERATING GUIDELINES TO ENABLE HIGH SCREENING EFFICIENCIES TO BE MAINTAINED DESPITE CHANGES IN FEEDSTOCK;
D) SCALE UP PARAMETERS FOR USE IN DESIGN OF SUBSEQUENT RESOURCE RECOVERY PLANTS AT VARIOUS PRODUCTION LEVELS.
