NUCLEAR ASTROPHYSICS : EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDIES

Objective

Experimental and theoretical investigations were carried out into the properties of atomic nuclei and nuclear transmutations in various astrophysical environments as well as research in the fields of stellar structure and evolution, and nucleosynthesis.

In particular, the following areas were investigated:
the measurement of astrophysically important nuclear reactions involving radioactive nuclei with lifetimes below one hour;
the new measurements of subcoulomb barrier nuclear reactions involving stable nuclei;
the modelling of nuclear reactions at energies of astrophysical interest;
the microscopic modelling of the static properties of exotic nuclei;
the buildup of more reliable models for the structure and evolution of stars as well as for nucleosynthesis;
the chemical evolution and dating of the galaxy.
A better understanding of the chemical composition of the universe and of the energy sources and evolution of various astrophysical objects requires the measurement of many sub-Coulomb nuclear reaction cross sections, involving in particular radioactive and isomeric nuclei. Relevant laboratory studies need novel experimental techniques which will be developed within the project. The experimental studies will be complemented with detailed nuclear physics
calculations and with the refined modelling of astrophysical scenarios. For the first time in Europe, the proposed project makes possible an immediate coupling between laboratory and theoretical nuclear astrophysics. Furthermore, the availability of radioactive ion beams will be unique in the world.
