BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY STEROID RECEPTION IN INSECTS

Objetivo

Ecdysteroids play a central role in insect endocrinology. The mode of action of ecdysteroids will be elucidated by focussing on the ecdysteroid receptor, the intra-cellular mediator of ecysteroid action. The receptor will be purified and used to generate monoclonal antibodies, which in turn will be used to develop more efficient purification procedures and for determining the developmental profile of the receptor in Drosophila and Calliphora. The interaction of the hormone-receptor complex with ecdysteroid-responsive genes will be investigated in vitro and in vivo to determine which elements are responsible for hormone regulation and whether a consensus sequence exists. The gene for the receptor will be cloned. The significance of these studies for the development of new methods of invertebrate pest control is indicated.
