FROM LANTHANIDE COMPLEXES TO UNIDIMENSIONAL MATERIALS

Objetivo

Different but related areas of coordination chemistry were brought together to carry out research into a range of potential blocks for the assembly of materials with interesting magnetic properties. The physicochemical properties of new heteropolynuclear complexes have been studied in detail, particularly those related to the magnetic interaction between paramagnetic metal ions. The possibility of using some of the prepared complexes as unconventional precursors for the preparation of pure or otherwise inaccessible mixed oxides was also successfully tested. Efforts were also devoted to the design of synthetic strategies for obtaining new molecular materials.

These strategies involved:
the preparation of smaller entities (often dinuclear complexes) to be held together by bridging groups (spacers);
the preparation of functionalized ligands which can link together mononuclear or dinuclear complexes into extended arrays;
the preparation of polynuclear compartmental ligands and related heteronuclear complexes.
The project is concerned with the development of coordination complexes of lanthanides into extended unidimensional arrays. Target arrangements are based on homometallic liquid crystals and
heterobimetallic polymers. Such compounds are of interest in the areas of electrochrmism, discotic liquid crystals and ferromagnetic materials. The experience gained from our past and current
collaborations will serve as a necessary and strong foundation for this proposal.
