Objectif
The experience gained during the realization of the "GEOMAARS" research program (see annexe A), has confirmed the prime importance of studying sedimentary sequences deposited in Maar lakes, for the investigations on Palaeoenvironments and Geomagnetic field variations. Six European countries (France, Ireland, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Italy) propose to join their scientific and technical powers to be able to study, with a true mind of international cooperation, Maar lake sequences from the three main volcanic areas of Western Europe : Eifel (Germany), Massif Central (France), Central and Southern Italy. This research program, by the collection and analyses of sedimentary cores, essentially aims at acquiring new sets of data on the climatic and geomagnetic evolution which prevailed over Western Europe during the last million of years and also at evaluating the spatial constraints on the fluctuations : in particular, a dynamical and chronological synthesis of the last interglacial from the North sea regions to the Mediterranean will be possible.
